Choose from 1 or 2 day orientation sessions—delivered at your facility—to start your accreditation process with greater confidence.
Orientation is intended to make the accreditation process clear to you and your staff starting with QI general knowledge. As leader in your facility, you’ll benefit from quality improvement management practices, and also understanding your staff’s role in observing and reporting on compliance. The three orientation topics are:

- Qmentum International For Leaders
- Qmentum International for Self-Assessment Teams

Your orientation sessions can be delivered in conjunction with your readiness assessment or you can schedule another visit. Your two day orientation includes all three QI focused sessions. One-day orientations enable AC to consult with you about content so you’re getting the information you need within the timeframes you require.

Before you start the accreditation process, your organization can choose to undergo a comprehensive analysis against all high priority criteria and required organizational practices — a Readiness Assessment (RA). The RA Report tells you where you’re starting your accreditation journey; both to capture your current state, and to help set realistic future goals.
After the Assessment, you’ll be given a report to help you prepare to meet fundamental accreditation requirements (based on Qmentum International Standards) like High Priority Criteria and Required Organizational Practices (ROPs) essential to health care quality improvement.
Do You Meet Your Targeted Accreditation Level—Or Do You Have More Work To Do?
Work with your AC Advisor to prepare for your true accreditation survey experience at your on-site Simulated Survey. Through assessing a pre-selected sub-set of standards, you’ll find out what accreditation level best suits your organization’s current operating standard and where you stand before completing the accreditation process.
To meet Gold, Platinum or Diamond accreditation awards you must meet relevant criteria and Required Operational Procedures (ROPs). After the simulated survey, you’ll also be given guidance on how to improve.

Gauge the effectiveness of your accreditation program with input from every level of your organization. A web-based SelfAssessment Manager™ tool lets multiple staff contribute to your compliance reporting, and keep track of your progress. The easy-to-use management software helps you collect and report on findings using non-technical language.

How Is Your Accreditation Decided?
Accreditation Canada expert surveyors determine your compliance with criteria (high priority criteria and Required Organizational Practices so your award is based on objective and knowledgeable observations complemented by advice and guidance from your peers.
A Peer-Led Accreditation Survey that takes place every 12 to 18 months after your Readiness Assessment tells you what accreditation level you’ve achieved.
Your health care facility will be assessed—not audited—against Qmentum International Standards by your peers.
You can work toward continuous improvement offered through three levels of accreditation.
Know Your Accreditation Award Within 20 Business Days of Survey Completion
Your new accreditation level (Gold, Platinum, Diamond, or Accreditation with Conditions) or non-accreditation decision will be awarded, in a report, within 20 business days of the completion of the accreditation survey.
Your 3 levels for accreditation range from fundamental achievement to comprehensive quality improvement:
- GOLD Award — you meet basic structures and processes linked to the foundational elements of safety and quality improvement;
- PLATINUM Award — you’ve built on the elements of quality and safety, and key elements of client-centered care, consistent service delivery and client/staff involvement in decision-making;
- DIAMOND Award — your quality improvements are backed by evidence and best practice showing improved services, benchmarked with peer organizations, to achieve system-level improvements.
What If You Don’t Meet Accreditation Standards On Your First Try?
You may not meet the full accreditation level on your first attempt. But, instead of receiving Accreditation with Condition (based on the Gold, Platinum or Diamond level criteria), you’re given the opportunity to address challenging areas and try again to achieve your accreditation.
A Non-Accreditation finding is followed up with an English-speaking consultation to show you next steps.
Supplementary surveys (6 months after the on-site survey), and full surveys (after one year), are two options which give you a second chance at achieving accreditation so that you don’t waste effort you’ve put into the accreditation process so far. Within this time period, you have the opportunity to make the necessary changes (demonstrated during the subsequent survey) to become complaint with your desired standards.

Set Your Facility Apart From Other Health Care Providers
If you want to show commitment to excellence and innovation for two specific health services — Trauma and Stroke — AC acknowledges the extra effort you put into these service areas.
To achieve Accreditation Canada’s Distinction program status you must implement at least one project that meets criteria for excellence and innovation distinction.
- The project you’d like to submit for Distinction award project must offer evidence-based actions and communicate results that prove overall improved service quality.
- To be eligible for consideration, you need to complete an evaluation, and keep track of sustainability and performance indicators.
